Standing Structural Steel at the Northern Retail Center

Knoxville Collage 1

We worked through Labor Day, when eight truckloads of structural steel were on their way from Alabama for arrival at 7:00 am Tuesday. This marked a new phase of construction for our northern retail center.

With a multi-story building, our crew required a 100-ton capacity crane to hoist equipment to the second level to begin installation of the structural steel. Other developments around the site include:

  • Steel is inventoried and “shook out” to its location for future erection.
  • MEP crews were busy with overhead rough-in of utilities.
  • Fire sprinkler contractors were added to our onsite team.
  • Precast Crews continued hoisting the 50,000 pound and over loads of concrete into place at the southern end of the project.
  • Caisson crews near complete of their work with less than 10 units remaining.
  • Concrete Crews poured footings for the upper and last retaining wall.
  • Earthwork crews progressed with underground utilities and rough grading of the site.

Pier Cap Installation–New Critical Path Activity

Knoxville Collage 4-19-13With the completion of caissons on the northern retail center, crews are busy with pier cap installation in the area. These caps will be the foundations for the installation of the precast columns scheduled to arrive in about a month.

This operation begins with the excavation of the area around the drilled caisson. A “mud slab” is then poured to allow an all-weather working surface. Rebar crews then move into install the reinforcing steel for the pier cap.  Final forming is installed for the support of anchor bolts and precast dowels. With work completed, quality control inspectors check for size, count and location of imbeds. With approval, the concrete truck are released to pour.

Elsewhere on the project, grading for retaining wall footings move forward. On the southern retail center,  a partial release of this area has allowed caisson crews to proceed.

With 5 drill rigs now onsite, caisson installation moved into the triple digits. We have completed 125 to date.

As we completed drill piers on the north end of the project, concrete crews began saw cuts in the existing slab for the future installation of pier caps. These caps will be the base where precast columns will be erected.

On the south end ,demolition of the elevated slab is nearing completion and recycling of the old concrete slab is in progress.

Caisson Installation Moves Forward

Knoxville Collage

With 3 drill rigs onsite and a fourth to arrive next week, we move forward with caisson installation. To date, we have poured more than 60 drilled piers and crews are schedule to work this weekend.

Truckloads of storm piping and water quality units continued to arrive and lay down yards are established for future utility work.
